The Evolutionary Changes in Construction Between the De Havilland Essay
The Evolutionary Changes in Construction Between the De Havilland Comet and the Airbus A380 Aircraft - Essay Example In addition, the jetliner also had a large square window and a pressurized fuselage. Regarding the era, the Comets provided a comfortable passenger cabin. It made its first commercial debut in 1952 where it flew without any problem. Its successful debut as a commercial jet helped drew passengers from all parts of the country with an interest in using the Comets as their preferred choice of flight. However, the success stories of the Comets did not last long since the airplane began experiencing problems just a year after its commercial service debut. In fact, three of the Comets broke up while, on flight resulting in an accident, that received wide publication by the media, according to Montagu-Pollock (2012). Investigations that followed showed that the accidents occurred due to catastrophic metal fatigue that the manufacturing engineers did not understand property at the time of its manufacturing. This prompted the withdrawal of the Comet from service after which it was taken for e xtensive testing to unearth the real cause of the accident. Investigations showed that the accident had initially been wrongly blamed on poor weather. Instead, design flaws were identified, which included dangerous installation methodology, and dangerous stresses at the corners of the windows. As a result, the Comet was modified with oval windows and structural reinforcements among many other changes, notes Nolan (2010). The other rival manufacturers of aircrafts learnt from the Comet and began making improvements in their while manufacturing processes avoid the mistakes made during the manufacture of the first Comet. Overview of the construction design of the Comet The first De Havilland Comet was made entirely of metal low-wing cantilever monoplane, observed Montagu-Pollock (2012). They had four engines, two of which were mounted below the wings for powering the plane. The two engines were buried under the wings to prevent the drag of podded engines, as well as to give room for sm aller fin and rudder. The mounting of the engines higher in the wings was also meant to reduce the risk of injection damage, which had been a major problem associated with turbine engines. It also had four-place cockpits for two pilots, navigator, and a flight engineer (Nolan 2010). Unlike the features of the aircrafts of the time, the first Comet had a clean low-drag design, which included the swept-wing leading edge, four-wheel bogies, and integral wing fuel tanks. The original De Havilland Comet measured almost the same length as the later Boeing 737-100. However, it carried fewer people in a spacious environment than the Boeing 737-100 (Birtles 1990, p.11). The British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) installed 36 reclining ââ¬Ëslumber seatsââ¬â¢ with center measuring about 45-inches allowing for a greater leg space both behind and in front. Air France, on the other hand, was fitted with 11 rows of seats plus four seats installed on its comets. The plane also had tables where passengers can have the feeling of enjoyment and comfort. Amenities included a large galley capable of serving hot and cold cuisines and drinks, according to Ron and Patterson (2010, p.19). It also had toilets for both men and women. Because of the safety concerns, the airplane had an emergency section, which included several life rafts kept in the wings, just next to the engines. However, after encountering problems while, on flight, several improvements have been made to ensure that such accidents do not occur

Room Division Operation Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Room Division Operation Management - Essay Example Other organisations such as learning institutions provide accommodation plus reception services (Pizam 2010, p. 103). For instance, higher education institutions such as colleges and universities provide accommodation inform of hostels (Andrews 2008, p. 38). Accommodation services in such organisations comprise of administration, booking, as well as communication services, while the reception services comprise of enquiries, cashiers plus room allocation services (Pizam 2010, p. 103). Accommodation and front office services are split into diverse departments and have a number of functions (Pizam 2010, p. 103). They include a front office manager whose works is to provide high quality services through providing more than the demands of the clients (Andrews 2008, p. 39). This manager plans, organises, controls, as well as directs all the functioning expenses plus the issue connected to the revenues (Pizam 2010, p. 103). The work of the guest service personnel is to welcome guests/customers who arrive at the hotel, show them the reception for clearing purposes, assign the guests their rooms plus assisting the customers carry their belongings to their rooms (Pizam 2010, p. 103). They also book and organise for guestsââ¬â¢ arrival. Finally, night auditors work at the front office and they complement the work of the front office manager, as well as the guest service personnel. They also posts charges for numerous services offered to the guest (Andrews 2008, p. 39). A number of legal and statutory requirements help prevent business oppression and preserve competition by regulating the business functions (Pizam 2010, p. 104). The law urges that hotel operators should agree on the scope concerning operations and terms of rates, room provision and business conditions along with uniforms. In addition, the room allocation law counts or holds the innkeepers accountable for the customersââ¬â¢ property (Andrews 2008, p. 39). Nevertheless, this

Theories and thesis - Essay Example All these different criminal patterns develop their own financial, social and political bases of strength and power (Varese, 2010). The problems presented by organized crimes The problems of examining organized crime start when the analysis of the threats, risks, sizes and impacts prevails. Also, determining the illegal markets and money laundering by the organized gang is difficult to estimate (Varese, 2010). These problems are difficult to handle because they involve measuring exceeding many different things and too many political issues engage in organized crime and gangs. There is also a remarkably thin line between the legitimate and illegitimate markets; thus, the size of one market overlaps partially with the other. The organized crimes are also grouping and fragmenting themselves; they are like a mutating gene and any estimate will not bring about the necessary results (Mallory, 2011). Organized criminal activities are also difficult to prosecute. This is because some of the crimes are expensive to investigate and involve even nations. Some crimes are also not prohibited in some nations that might be neighboring. These crimes can spill over if there is loose border protection. As a result of appreciation in the community where they operate, most of the organized crimes receive protection from the law enforcers (Varese, 2010). Most countries also have not developed strategic management and prosecution laws to stop the emergence, development and growth of organized crime. The Relationships between Organized Crimes Illegal crime groups usually join hands to ensure that they thrive. These relationships formed with each other can be dissolved any time, and new affiliations crafted. Each group can even break down to smaller operating units, totally independent from the previous ones. The organized gangs like Black Disciples adjust their operations to allow another gang smuggling guns to use their system. This arrangement allows the gun smugglers to sell the g uns at a discounted price to Black Disciples (Mallory, 2011). The mafia also provides sharp- shooters, hit men, and enforcers to other branches or other groups at a price. This covers-up the crime and makes it difficult to be traced to the offender. Organized crime also ensures enormous benefit to the community involved. They organize parties or charity work to show that they benefit and give back to the society in exchange for the crimes they commit. The Black Disciples used to keep black money to the black people in the black market (Varese, 2010). The leadership of the organized crime also ensured that the group activities involve politicians in the city involved. This is to keep the organized crime in a position where they can do their work. The organized criminal gangs provide money, and the willing officers agree to protect them by either allowing their operation or destroying the evidence. Legal Limitations associated with combating organized crimes Most governments have trie d to combat organized crime by enacting laws that prevent, prohibit and discourage organized crimes. Prosecution of organized crime has also posed a problem to law enforces. An example is the inability of the Federal Government to sentence Al Capone for selling alcohol during prohibition and instead jailing him for averting income tax (Albanese, 2010). The Federal Governm

A Growing Level of Financial Engineering and Risk Management Research Paper
A Growing Level of Financial Engineering and Risk Management - Research Paper Example The renowned theory by Lon Fuller that is titled the ââ¬Å"inner moralityâ⬠of the Rule of Law clearly stipulates that a legal system will fail if laws presented within the system are obscure, and contradicting. Therefore, to ensure that Islamic banking maintains its unique nature it has been critical to devise a legal framework that ensures efficient functioning of Islamic banking, which is in conformity with Islamic teachings. We can look into the key elements that are contained within a legal framework to support the efficient functioning of Islamic banking. Aldohni stated that under the Islamic banking act, Islamic banking business is described as a banking business whose operations and objectives only contain elements that have been approved by the Islamic religion and in particular, the Shariah laws (63-65). Therefore, the main elements within the legal framework for the efficient functioning of Islamic banking draw their origin to the Islamic religion. The most predomina nt element of the legal framework for Islamic banking is the prohibition of the issuance of interests on all forms of transactions within Islamic banks. This element within the legal framework ensures the efficient functioning of Islamic banking in a manner that conforms to Islamic teachings and it helps in differentiating Islamic banks from the other commercial banks (Aldohni, 68-71). This differtiation would lead to figuring out to the public the equitability and avoidance of Ghara in Islamic banking as compared to conventional system conventional banking legal and regulatory framework.

2 Questions - Assignment Example Therefore, such markets rely on foreign aid as a major source of income in the market (Moyo, 2011). The reliance on the foreign aid from other countries is rampant such that the country and economy view it as a basic induction. Killing foreign aid in such market structures is a negativity that will plunge the people into abject poverty. Insufficient research in the market structures is a vital subject that leads to a flop in the market instruments. In many cases, foreign countries force some of the poor countries to indulge in some activities that are considered to be lucrative. Though they accord the relevant funding to such activities, they do not reflect the vital ideas that should be considered in the markets. First, for an effective market structure, there is a need to focus on the market structures. This is by conducting sufficient research. For instance, china is in great demand for resources emanating from Africa. However, it is not obvious that Africa is demanding the same from china (Moyo, 2011). Therefore, reflecting on such factors is an issue that should be considered. Secondly, sufficient research on the demography is to be encompassed. The population demand in China is not the same in Africa. Therefore, the demand for goods in the markets is different. Imposing similar projects in the two regions is more unlikely to be successful. Secondly, market instruments are not recording success in the stated countries due to Unprofessional Labor force. In China, the government invests an arguably large amount of capital in training their work-force. This is an activity that is widely practiced across the national divide. Therefore, the country boasts of having professional and trained personnel. With such notations in the economy, the country has been recorded among the countries with the rapidly growing economy alongside the United States and Canada (Moyo, 2011). It is palpable that trained and educated personnel will reflect a better performance in

Appraise the impact of Post-Latham and Egan report initiatives on Essay
Appraise the impact of Post-Latham and Egan report initiatives on procurement pathways and ways of working within the construction industry - Essay Example 1. The government, including public sector organisations such as local authorities and health authorities, should become a best practice client. Clients should remain at the centre of the procurement process and work together to bring value in their projects and promote excellence in design. 4. Although the construction industry is likely to have an output equivalent to approximately 10 per cent of the GDP, the industryââ¬â¢s in-house research and development capital has fallen by 80 per cent since 1981. Investment in research and development is required. 6. In order to achieve 10 per cent annual reduction in construction costs and 20 per cent reduction of defects, radical changes are needed to the processes through which the project develops. These processes need to be explicit and transparent to the industry and its clients. Initially the government (being the sponsoring side) and the key player within the construction industry responded well to both the reports. The drive for change originated from procurement and contractual areas in the UK construction industry. Later years witnessed considerable changes in UK construction industry, which impacted the way projects were managed and reviewed. The construction process at all levels experienced the benefits of collaboration, and ultimately the way of working in the construction industry changed. The main responsible agencies within the government i.e. The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions and The Office of Government Commerce, along with the key players in construction industry attempted to improve the performance of departments and Contractors. The report ââ¬ËMordenising Constructionââ¬â¢ by the Controller and Auditor General (2001) mentions that, government and key players within the construction industry took several steps to implement the key principles highlighted in the reports. These include: 3.

Strategic and Financial Decision-making Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Strategic and Financial Decision-making - Essay Example Both the companies are listed under FTSE 100. Under CAPM the calculation of cost of capital depends on the principle that the rate of return required on a security is equal to the risk-free rate of interest plus a risk premium, based on the following formula- Therefore the beta of Sage Group as per calculations is less than the beta that has been published in Bloomberg site and the beta of Diageo Plc as per calculations is also less than that has been published in this site. There can be many reasons for this difference. Like in the case of data like beta that is reported by a site the calculations are more extensive. For the purpose of the calculations, the monthly returns relating to the last twenty four months only has been taken. But the beta estimation in Bloomberg is based on either daily returns or quarterly returns over a long span of time. Some sites base their calculations on the data since the stock inception. As the beta calculated by these sites is based on a longer span of time therefore they are more reliable as it covers a larger number of data points. So the difference in ââ¬Ëtime frameââ¬â¢ can result in different beta estimates. Some of the financial services use weekly observations while others use monthly obser vations whereas others base their calculations on the last day of trading. Another reason for the varying beta is that they are calculated using different indices in the market. Some sources use Standard & Poor 500 as the benchmark index, some use Russell 1000, 2000 and others use Value Line Index. In such situations the best way is to choose which provides the beta for most of the companies in the guideline (Pratt & Niculita, 2007, pp.211) It may be possible that the fundamentals of the company have changed over time in that case the beta that is calculated based on a recent period is more reliable (Pratt & Grabowski, 2008, pp.141). Based on this it can be said that the beta based on the recent period is more reliable as
